History: Key Dates

  • *1616** - First recorded sighting of Dutch sailor Dirk Hartog
  • *17th century** - The Dutch mapped most of the west and north coasts of the country they called New Holland. But they did not try to settle it
  • *1770** - Sailing and mapping James Cook along the east coast of Australia, which he named New South Wales. He occupied territory for Great Britain. He first landed in Botany Bay, creating a penal colony
  • *1825** - Tasmania becomes a separate colony
  • *1836** - Establishment of a separate colony of South Australia (not a penal colony)
