The Afterlife Flashcards
What do Catholics believe about when Jesus died on the cross?
when Jesus died on the cross, he paid the price for our sins and when he rose from the dead, he defeated death. Therefore, because of this Catholics can hope to go to Heaven after death and spend eternity with God. This is called Eternal Life.
What are different types of judgement?
- ‘particular judgement’ from God. This is an individual judgement where God decides on the soul’s destination based on the choices the person has made in their life.
- General judgement, (Parousia when Jesus returns from the dead, ) creates a new heaven and earth
What are the 3 places Catholics believe our soul goes to after death?
- Heaven
- Hell
- Purgatory
What is Heaven?
Those who have accepted God’s grace and forgiveness in this life will enjoy eternal existence with God after their death
What is Hell?
It is not that God chooses to punish, it is that the individual chooses to reject the love, mercy and compassion of God.
What is Purgatory?
-Where a person’s soul is cleansed or purged to enable them to be fully in the presence of God (go to Heaven)
