BIBLE
The Christian holy book. Christians believe it contains the Word of God.
ADVENT
The four Sundays leading up to Christmas. This is time set apart by Christians to prepare for the coming of Jesus.
REVELATION
The ways in which God (reveals himself) to human beings. For example, through the Bible
CONSCIENCE
A person’s sense of right and wrong. The conscience is their inner guidance from God.
EPIPHANY
The festival that ends Christmas. It remembers the visit of the Magi (Wise Men) to Jesus.
PURGATORY
A place in the afterlife where a person’s soul goes to be cleansed from sin before they can go to Heaven to spend eternal life with God.
JUDGEMENT
The belief that everyone will be judged by God for doing right or wrong.
LENT
This season is the 40 days before Easter. Catholics will fast, pray and give to charity during this time.
LITURGICAL YEAR
The Church’s year of worship. It includes Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost.
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
14 framed pictures or carvings that are placed around the Church and show the events of Jesus’ crucifixion.
PILGRIMAGE
A journey to a place of religious importance. For example, Catholics travel to Lourdes in the hope of receiving healing.
CONFESSIONALS
A place where Catholics can confess their sins to the priest during the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
ADULTERY
Sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not their spouse

DIVORCE
To legally end a marriage. Divorce is not accepted in the Catholic Church
COHABITATION
To live together in a sexual relationship without being married.
COMMITMENT
A sense of dedication and obligation to someone or something.
CONTRACEPTION
Methods used to stop a woman getting pregnant. For example, the Pill, Condom.
GENDER EQUALITY
People of all genders enjoying the same rights and opportunities in all aspects of their lives.
REPONSIBILITIES
Actions/duties you are expected to do or feel obligated to carry out.
ROLES
Position, status or function of a person in society, as well as the characteristics and social behaviour expected of them.
CENSORSHIP
- The practice of suppressing and limiting access to materials considered obscene, offensive or a threat to security.
- restricting speech through censorship laws
DISCRIMINATION
Acts of treating groups of people or individuals differently, based on prejudice.
EXTREMISM
Believing in, supporting and acting upon ideas that are very far from what most people consider correct or reasonable.
HUMAN RIGHTS
The basic entitlements of all human beings, afforded to them simply because they are human.
PERSONAL CONVICTION
Something a person strongly feels or believes in. For example, that all people are equal.
PREJUDICE
Pre-judging; judging a person on how they look before knowing anything about them.
RELATIVE POVERTY
A standard of poverty measured in relation to the standards of poverty in which a person lives
ABSOLUTE POVERTY
An acute state of deprivation, whereby a person cannot access the most basic of their human needs.
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Promoting a fair society by challenging injustice and valuing diversity. Ensuring that everyone has equal access to provisions, opportunities and rights.
