Functions of clothing
Safety - offers protection from injury infection eg firefighter uniform
Weather protection - protection from rain wind sun eg waterproof jacket
Modesty - society expects people to wear a minimum amount of clothing from modesty
Hygiene - all areas of proof food production and preparation, protective clothing eg chef jacket/ trousers
Self expression - allows people to express their personalities
Identification - particular clothing or uniforms indicate a persons role e.g. nurses

Decoration
privacy - Soft furnishing prevent orders seen into homes
Comfort - Soft furnishings provide comfort in the home unpholstered furniture are more comfortable than solid wood alternatives
protection - Fabric oven gloves prevent burns in the kitchen
Warmth - Soft furnishings provide he is particularly important in winter months
Factors to consider when choosing textiles

weak when wet
shrinks at high temperatures

What are flame retardant finishes
Apply to fabrics to reduce the risk of flame ability
Coated flame retardant finishes
Cheap message as only applied on outside of fabrics and is not permanent
Inherent flame retardant finishes
Expensive method as apply to fabric fibre prior to being woven or knitted into fabric making it permanent

- Fabrics use must pass fire safety test e.g. match test
- Foam fillings must be CMHR foam
- Permanent safety labels on all relevant items must be securely attached clearly legible and durable
- Square or triangle display label must be attached to all relevant items
