Textbook: Chapter 18 - Factors Influencing the Structure of Communities Flashcards
Apparent Competition
Occurs whena single species of predator feeds ont wo prey species supporting a higher predator density, increasing the rate at which prey are consumed. As a result, the density of both prey species is lowered, suggesting a competitive interaction
Bottom-up control
Influence of producers on the trophic levels above them in a food web
Keystone predation
Predation that is central to the organization of a community; the predator enhances one or more inferior competitors by reducing the abundance of the superior competitor.
Null model
Assumes that the presence and abundance of the individual species found in a given community are solely a result of the independent repsonses of each individual species to the prevailing physical environment
Top-down control
Influence of predators on the structure of lower trophic levels in a food web.
