Text ch.2b Flashcards
Define each term: 4 parts of Trustworthiness
Authenticity: recorded data are a genuine reflection of reality
-To what extent is the recorded data a genuine reflection of reality?
Precision: results offer accurate account of reality, based on ability of other researchers to
reach similar conclusions
Portability: results applicable in some way
to other environments
Impartiality: results offer accurate account of
reality, based on ability of other researchers to
reach similar conclusions
Authenticity vs. Credibility
Authenticity: is the recorded data a genuine reflection of reality?
Credibility: does the data provide a believable depiction of the subject under study?
What to look for when judging dependability?6
• Is the methodology clearly reported and justified? • Are detailed findings reported? • Is there a research team? • Is intercoder testing, assessment reported? • Is computerized coding reported? • Is the research peer reviewed?
Strategy to assess trustworthiness of qualitative research: As the reader, As the researcher look for these 15 things
- background of researcher and who they were funded by
- research team or just one person
- wherre the research is being published, is it peer reviewed
- is methodology and results clearly presented
- are sources they use valid/literature review
- able to situate their research within the past research
- quality of their own sources - do they state their own limitations
- do they acknowledge research that does not meet their results or beliefs
- what did their research contribute
- population parameter and sample (sample size and selection)
- ethics acknowledgement
- relevant factors and topics; discussing potential future research areas
- acknowledge biases/partisanship
- portability?
- coding
- proper conceptualization of definitions
define portability and transferability
portability – results
applicable in some way to
other environments.
transferability –the ability to export lessons from one set of cases to draw conclusions about another set of cases
Three main questions in Transferability
• Is the methodology clearly reported and justified? • Are detailed findings reported? • Are limitations of the study, scope conditions, etc. discussed?
