Tetracyclines Flashcards
Tetracyclines (4 drugs)
Doxycycline
Minocycline
Tetracycline
Tigecycline
Tetracyclines MOA
Competitive inhibition of tRNA binding to 30S subunits. Prevents addition of new amino acids to the peptide chain. Bacteriostatic
Tetracycines indications
Lyme disease, Rocky mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, granuloma inguinale, brucellosis, cholera, relapsing fever, PUD (H. pylori), chlamydia urethritis, acne, MRSA
Tigecycline - indications
MRSA (skin & soft tissue inf), intraabdominal infections, community acquired pneumonia
Tetracycline that can only be adm intravenously
Tigecycline
Tetracyclines should not be taken with:
Calcium, aluminum, iron, dairy products, antacids (reduces bioavailability of tetracycline)
Spectrum of tetracyclines, bacteriocidal or -static
Broad-spectrum, bacteriostatic
Most effective group of drugs for acne vulgaris
Tetracyclines
Tetracycline used often for acne
Minocycline
Tetracyclines - contraindications
Pt growing teeth and bone, pregnancy, use of nephrotoxic drugs (aminoglycosides), expired drug preparations (more nephrotoxic)
Tetracyclines - adverse effects
Discoloration of teeth, hypoplasia of enamel. Nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, photosensitivity (erythema)
Tetracycline most associated to photosensitivity
Doxycycline
