Tetracycline Flashcards
Examples:
Tetracycline,Doxycucline, Minocycline,
MOA:
Bbinds to the 30S ribosomal subunit with consequent misreading of information for protein synthesis 🡺 Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis= (Bacteriostatic)
Adverse reactions
Photosensitivity
GI disturbances
Hypersensitivity reactions
Discoloration of teeth (If given in midpregnancy-5months deciduous teeth are affected)
Late pregnancy or childhood, can cause temporary suppression of bone growth
Drug interactions:
Divalent metal ions: Interfere with absorption and activity.
Enzyme inducers (barbiturates, phenytoin etc) reduce serum level of tetracycline
Inhibit Vit K producing intestinal flora, thus can potentiate the anticoagulant effect of warfarin
