Testes Flashcards
Each testis length and weight
5cm long
3cm wide
2.5 cm thick
10-15g
Scrotum
Where the testes hang.
A flashy pouch suspended inferior to the perineum.
During fetal development the testes form where
Adjacent to the kidneys
Gubernaculum testis
A bundle of connective tissue fibers. Extends from each testis to the posterior wall of a small anterior and inferior pocket of the peritoneum.
Length doesn’t change
During the seventh developmental month, fetal growth continues rapidly, and circulating hormones stimulate
A contraction of the gubernaculum testis.
During this time each testis moves through the abdominal musculature, along with small pockets of the peritoneal cavity. This process is called the descent of the testes into the scrotum.
Cryptorchism
One or both of the testes have not descended into the scrotum by the time of birth.
They are lodged in the abdominal cavity or within the inguinal canal.
Cryptorchid testes should be corrected before puberty because
A cryptorchid testis will not produce spermatozoa.
if both testes are cryptorchid, the male will be sterile/infertile. If the testes cannot be moved into the scrotum they usually are removed
What percent of males with uncorrected crypt orchid testes eventually develop testicular cancer
10%
