Ecosystem services are the many and varied benefits provided by the natural environment and healthy ecosystems.
These are divided in three categories:
- Provisional services: Food, fiber, biochemicals, fresh water.
- Regulation services: Thermoregulation, pollution, air purification, climate regulation, disease regulation, water purification.
- Cultural services: Aesthetic, education, spiritual believes, inspiration, sense of being.

Natural water levels are high in winter and dry in summer with rainfall, rainwater driven -> This water is nutrient poor.

Surface water is managed, it is low in winter for early access in spring and slightly higher in summer. -> This water is nutrient rich.
