Origin: spinous process of T3-T6
Insertion: transverse process of C1-C4
Action: bilaterally, extend head; singly, laterally flex and rotate head to same side as contracting muscle
Splenius capitis
Origin: ligamentum nuchae and spinous process of C7-T4
Insertion: occipital bone and mastoid process of temporal bone.
Action: bilaterally, extend head and vc; laterally flex and rotate head to same side as contracting muscle
Semispinalis capitis
Origin: articulate process of C4-C6 and transverse process of C7-T7
Insertion: occipital bone between superior and inferior Nuchal lines
Action: together, extend head and vc; singly, rotate head to side opposite contracting muscle
Semispinalis cervicis
Origin: TP of T1-T5
Insertion: spinous process of C1-C5
Action: together, both semispinalis cervicis and semispinalis thoracis muscles extend vc of their respective region; singly, rotate head to side opposite contracting muscle
Semispinalis thoracis
Origin: TP of T6-T10
Insertion: spinous process of C6-T4
Action: together, both semispinalis cervicis and semispinalis thoracis muscles extend vc of their respective region; singly, rotate head to side opposite contracting muscle
Multifidus
Origin: sacrum; illi; tp of lumbar, thoracic, and C4-C7
Insertion: spinous of a more superior vertebrae
Action: together, extend vc; singly, weakly laterally flex vc and weakly roared vc to opposite contracting muscle
Rotatores
Origin: TP of all vertebrae
Insertion: spinous process of vertebra superior to the one of origin.
Action: together, weakly extend vc; singly, weakly rotate vc to side to opposite contracting muscle
Interspinales
Origin: superior surface of all spinous process
Insertion: inferior surface of spinous process of vertebra superior to the one of origin
Action: together, weakly extend vc; singly, stabilize vc during movement
Intertransversarli
Origin: TP of all vertebrae
Insertion: TP of vertebra superior to the one of origin
Action: together, weakly extend vc; singly, weakly laterally flex vc and stabilize it during movements
