Action: moves eyeballs inferiorly and Medially (looking down an towards midline)
Innervation: oculomotor 3 nerve
Superior rectus
Orgin: common tendinous ring
Insertion: superior and central part of eyeballs
Action: moves eyeballs superiorly and medially
Innervation: oculomotor (3) nerve
Lateral rectus
Origin: common tendinous ring
Insertion: lateral side of eyeballs
Action: moves eyeballs laterally (abduction)
Innervation: abducens (6) nerve
Medial Rectus
Origin: common tendinous ring
Insertion: medial side of eyeballs
Action: moves eyeballs medially (adduction)
Innervation: oculomotor (3) nerve
Superior oblique
Orgin: sphenoid bone, superior and medial to the common tendinous ring in orbit
Insertion; eyeball between superior and lateral recti.
Action: moves eyeballs inferiorly (downward) and laterally (abduction)
Innervation: trochlear (4) nerve
Inferior oblique
Origin: maxilla in floor of orbit
Insertion: eyeballs between inferior and lateral recti
Action: moves eyeballs superiorly and laterally (abduction)
Innervation: oculomotor (3) nerve
Levator palpebrae superioris
Origin: roof of orbit
Insertion: skin and tarsal plate of upper eyelids
Action: elevates upper eyelids
Innervation: oculomotor (3) nerve
Masseter

Action: elevates mandible (closing mouth)
Innervation: cranial nerve 5
Temporalis
Orgin: temporal bone
Insertion: coroniod process and ramus of mandible
Action: elevates and retracts mandible (brings back)
Innervation: cranial nerve 5
Medial pterygoid
Origin:medial surface of lateral portion of pterygoid process of sphenoid bone; maxilla
Insertion: angle and ramus of mandible
Action: Elevates and protracts mandible from side to side
Innervation: cranial nerve 5
Lateral pterygoid
Orgin: greater wing and lateral surface of lateral portion of pterygoid process of sphenoid bone
Insertion: condyle of mandible, tmj
Action: protracts mandible, depresses mandible as in opening mouth and moves mandible side to side
Innervation: cranial nerve 5
Genioglossus
Origin:mandible
Insertion: undersurface of tongue and hyoid bone
Action: depresses tongue and thrust it anteriorly (protraction)
Styoglossus
Origin: styloid process of temporal bone
Insertion: side and undersurface of tongue
Action: elevates tongue and draws it posteriorly (retraction
Hyglossus
Origin: greater horn and body of hyoid bone
Insertion: side of tongue
Action: depresses tongue and draws its sides
Palatoglossus
Origin: anterior surface of soft palate
Insertion: side of tongue
Action: elevates posterior portion of tongue and draws soft palate down on tongue
