TEST 3: Intelligence Flashcards
Describe how intelligence is measured
psychological assessment: the use of specified procedures to elevate the abilities, behaviors, and personal qualities of people
(abilities=intelligence, personal qualities=personality)
Explain how intelligence may be influenced by hereditary and environment
-Impoverished environment leads to a negative correlation between IQ and age (IQ decreases as age increases)
-Enriched environment can increase IQ (Flynn Effect: IQ increases 3-5 points every 10 years)
Twin studies
-MZ (identical) and DZ (fraternal, share 50% of genes)
-MZ twins that are raised in different environments have a correlation of +0.75
Adoption studies
-Adoptive mom and child (nurture, no genes) has correlation of +0.16
Identify important characteristics of assessment
Reliability: the consistency of a measure
Validity: the truthfulness of a measure
Standardization: able to compare same-aged peers (10 year old’s with other 10 year old’s)
