TEST 3: Emotion, Stress, and Health Flashcards
Identify the major theories of emotion and describe how they differ.
-JAMES-LANGE: body changes lead to emotion (shark, heartbeat, fear)
-CANNON-BARD: body changes and emotion happen together (shark, heartbeat & fear) THALUMUS
-SCHACHTER-SINGER: thoughts about body changes causes emotion (shark, heartbeat, thought, fear)
-COGNITIVE-APPRASIAL: thoughts about a stimulus lead to emotion (shark, think, fear)
Identify some of the neurophysiological bases of emotion.
-Emotions are linked with ANS activity (heart rate, breathing)
-Amygdala is involved in emotion (processes emotional significance of stimuli)
-Orbitofrontal cortex is involved in the processing of emotional cues (damage causes inappropriate reactions)
Define stress, stressors, and coping.
Stress: responses to a stimulus
Stressor: internal or external event that causes stress
Coping: process of dealing with stress
Outline the general adaptation syndrome (GAS).
- Alarm: stress leads to the activity of the sympathetic nervous system
- Resistance: prolonged stress leads to adaptation
- Exhaustion: long-term stress has a negative impact on health
Explain how stressors relate to health problems.
Long-term stress lowers resistance to disease and healing
