What is McBurney’s point?
Pain with palpation in RLQ is a positve sign and is associated with appendicitis
Blumberg’s sign/rebound tenderness
when applying slow and steady pressure to suspcted area, abruptly remove pressure and if pain is worse, this is a positive sign and = peritoneal irritation. if this is positive in children, its more likely they will have appendicitis
Rovsing’s sign
deeply palpate LEFT iliac fossa and if pain is felt in RIGHT iliac fossa, this is a positive sign. Positive sign is associated with acute appendicitis
Psoas test
with patient supine, place one hand just above the patients right knee and ask pt to raise the leg while applying downward pressure on the leg. pain can be indicative of irritation on the psoas muscle due to appendicitis.
heel drop test (Markle’s test or heel jar test)
have pt stand on toes and abruptly drop down to heels causing a jarring in the body. Pain in RLQ is indicative of appendicitis
Murphy’s sign
One hand at the costal margin in the RUQ and ask patient to breath deeply. if gallbladder is inflammed, the pt will have pain in the RUQ upon palpation and abrupt cessation of the breath.
