what is health policy and intervention in regards to HIV
health policy: health education in schools and at workplace
- United Nations Joint Program on HIV/AIDs (UNAIDs) works on the global level
- access to quality health care, including affording the newest HIV medication in generic form
increase awareness:
- the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) campaign: condom distribution and red ribbons
- Ugandan HIV/AIDs prevention campaign initiated by Uganda’s president
explain the “validity” of the satisfaction with good life scale
-does the scale measure what it’s intended to
convergent validity: does the scale correlate with other measures of life satisfaction
- correlation between self-reports and informant reports of satisfaction
- correlation between higher scores and fewer negative events and higher positive events
known groups: individuals who theoretically should have lower satisfaction score lower on the scale and vice versa
-people in jail score lower
ability to predict future behaviors
- higher levels of satisfaction = less suicide and lower mortality rates
- higher levels of satisfaction = higher rates of kids and marriage
explain the catecholamine pathway in fight or flight
- hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system which stimulates the adrenal medulla
- causes secretion of catecholamine which includes adrenaline (epinephrine)
what is traditional medicine
sum of knowledge, skills and practices based on the theories, beliefs and experiences of different cultures used in the maintenance of health
- only 4% of people in US use one of these specific forms of traditional medicine
- people more commonly use pieces of ideas
what are the 5 C’s defined by WHO (of HIV testing)
1) consent: patient must give consent
2) confidentiality: results disclosed to patient only
3) counseling: high quality pretest info and posttest counseling
4) correct test results: take precautions to ensure accurate testing
5) connection to prevention: needs to be efforts to provide preventative measures
people can refuse to hear test results
what is the corticosteroid pathway in fight or flight
- hypothalamus sends signals to pituitary/ “master” gland which secretes ACTH
- stimulates the adrenal cortex which leads to secretion of glucocorticoids (like cortisol) that prevent inflammation
explain the influence of the mind and Hippocrates previous belief
- Hippocrates believed the four humors used to affect traits (just a false belief)
- yellow bile, black bile, phlegm, and blood
- belief that excess of these cause influence on personality traits
