what is coronary heart disease
leading cause of heart attacks, reduced blood flow causes chest pain and shortness of breath (angina) and heart attacks (myocardial infarction)
what is carotid endarterectomy
used specifically to prevent strokes in people who have plaque buildup in their carotid arteries
-remove plaque and stitch up artery
what is percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
currently second most common form of cardiovascular surgery
- deflated balloon is in artery, then inflate it and compress the plaque against walls
- also called coronary angioplasty or stenting
what is cardiac catheterization
-with a coronary angiography, a dye is injected that allows the doctors to see arterial damage or blockage, then insert a catheter for treatment
what are the heart attack warning signs in females
- chest pain (less common)
- overly tired
- sleep disturbances
- back, neck, jaw pain
- shortness of breath
what are the heart attack warning signs in males
- chest pain
- irregular heartbeat
- dizzy, faint
- shortness of breath
- stomach discomfort
