Test 2/3: Doctrinal Developments Flashcards
What is a Creed and why was there resistance to creating one:
- Formal statement of Christian beliefs that guide someone’s actions
- Many were previously Millerites who had been disfellowshipped because their views didn’t match the established church creed, the bible was supposed to be their only creed that’s how their group was started after the great disappointment
How does Uniformity and Orthodoxy relate to the creation of a Creed:
-A creed of basic beliefs was published not to secure uniformity, but to introduce orthodoxy (teaching), they needed a base line to let others know what they believed in
How was the view of the “Trinity” developed:
-Originally the church didn’t believe in a trinity, but Ellen Whites visions changed that, now we believe that the Trinity is composed of 3 co-equal, co-eternal members of the Godhead
How was the view of the “Atonement” developed:
-Originally the church thought that atonement happened in the heavenly sanctuary after the crucifixion, Ellen White helped them to see that atonement was the crucifixion and what Jesus is doing in the heavenly sanctuary now is the benefits of that atonement
How was the “Heavenly Sanctuary” developed:
-Joseph Bates was the first to suggest that Jesus work in the heavenly sanctuary was judgement, Uriah Smith helped to connect it that idea to the first angels’ message (the time of her judgement has come)
How was the “Sabbath” developed:
-J.N Andrews studied and realized that the sabbath starts at sun down and ends at sun down
