Hyperpnea
laboured, deep respirations at a rate of greater than 20 breaths per min. occurs normally with exercise.
Apnea
temporary cessation of breathing and then resume. Persistent cessation results in respiratory arrest
Dyspnea
SOB resulting in laboured or difficulty breathing
Orthopnea
abnormal condition in which a person must sit or stand to breathe deeply or comfortably. Assessment includes noting the number of pillows used by the client.
Ischemia
lack of blood flow to the tissues; usually caused by a blockage in the artery
Dehiscence is
the partial or total separation of the wound layers
(Usually occurs at 3-11 days postinjury or surgery. Most commonly involves surgical wounds of the abdomen and can occur after a vigorous bout of coughing or straining. Strategy to prevent is to provide support to the area, such as using a pillow as a splint when coughing)
Evisceration is
is protrusion of the abdominal organs through the wound opening.
(Medical emergency and requires surgical intervention. PN should cover the organs with sterile saline-soaked towels, keep the client NPO, and monitor signs and symptoms of shock
Diverticulitis
the infection or inflammation of pouches that can form in your intestines.
Ascites
- an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid within the peritoneal cavity.
Ascites is free fluid in the peritoneal cavity and occurs with heart failure, portal hypertension, cirrhosis, hepatitis, pancreatitis, and cancer.
Cystitis
Inflammation of the urinary bladder which can be characterized by pain, urgency, and frequency
Oliguria
diminished capacity to form and pass urine
Lymphedema
swelling of an extremity caused by an obstructed lymph channel
Neuropathy
damage or dysfunction of one or more nerves that typically results in numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and pain in the affected area. Neuropathies frequently start in your hands and feet, but other parts of your body can be affected too.
Urticaria
– also known as hives, is an outbreak of swollen, pale red bumps or plaques (wheals) on the skin that appear suddenly – either as a result of the body’s reaction to certain allergens, or for unknown reasons. Hives usually cause itching, but may also burn or sting.
Stomatitis
inflammation of the mouth and lips. Can be caused by radiation and chemotherapy
