TERM 4 - UNIT 1 - Resource uses (p70-p75) Flashcards
EXPLAIN Resource
Something of VALUE that needs to be consumed to obtain a benefit from it
EXPLAIN Needs
ESSENTIAL to our survival (food, shelter)
What is global warming?
Warming of the earth’s atmosphere & oceans
What is an ECOSYSTEM?
Living and non-living organisms interact with one another
What are NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES, and provide some examples
- cannot be produced
- fossil fuels (coal ; petroleum)
- minierals (iron; gold)
What are RENEWABLE RESOURCES, and provide some examples
- Part of NATURAL environment
- continuous (flow of nature- example: water)
- sustained (nature replaces it)
What are NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES, and provide some examples
- cannot be produced
- fossil fuels (coal ; petroleum)
- minerals (iron; gold)
What non-renewable resources are ALWAYS present?
Soil
Son
Wind
What are the effects of UNWISE use of resources?
1) Tragedy of the commons -
People deplete limited resources in their own self-
interest
2) Over-fishing the oceans -
Taking too many fish out of the system
Non-sustainable use of the oceans
Commercial & non-commercial fishing too many
adult fish, not enough to breed
What causes OVER-FISHING?
Fishing fleets are 2-3 times larger than needed to take catches of fish
Why is OVER-FISHING a problem?
- almost 80% of fisheries are depleted
- losing ecosystems, health of oceans are under
stress, losing valuable food source
What does OVER-FISHING mean?
- Taking too many fish out of the system
- non-sustainable use of the oceans
Describe how the vicious cycle of OVER-FISHING results in a smaller fish population
> Commercial fishing fleets: use sophisticated means
(large nets)
Fishing fleets are increased (more food available)
Reduces the market price (lower profits)
The need to catch more and more, leads to smaller
fish population
What controls can be put in place to stop the vicious cycle of over-fishign?
- Quotas
- International treaties
Name some fishng techniques that have caused OVER-FISHING?
- Purse-seine fishing
- Drift net fishing
- Trawler fishing
- Fish farming
- Long line fishing
What is OVER-GRAZING?
Plants are exposed to grazing without TIME for recovery
What is BIODIVERSITY?
The number and type of DIFFERENT species
What is DESERTIFICATION?
Process in which land becomes increasingly DRY until little vegetation grows making the land like a desert
Explain the vicious cycle of OVER-GRAZING
Over-Grazing -> Less Grass -> Soil Erosion -> Lower productivity -> More livestock needed
What are the CAUSES of OVER-GRAZING?
- poorly managed agricultural areas
- tragedy of the commons(seen as wealth to have
lots of cattle) - over population of wild animals
- greed
- size of farm (too small)
EFFECTS of OVER-GRAZING
- soil erosion
- desertification
- dust storms
- nutritious plants REPLACED by less favourable
plants - animals starve and die
How does OVER-GRAZING reduce BIODEVERSITY?
- animals eat the moist plants first, as soon as these
plants have new growth - nutritious plants REPLACED by less favourable
plants
How does OVER-GRAZING lead to DESERTIFICATION
- Over-grazing REDUCE PLANT COVER, causes
soil erosion - eventually very little grows, causing desertification
