Part of weathering (Chemical) Flashcards
Name the types of CHEMICAL weathering
> Solution weathering
Hydrolysis (limestone pavement with grites and clints
Honeycomb weathering
Oxidation
Explain what SOLUTION weathering is:
Minerals or soluble chemicals in the rock, dissolve directly in water
Give an example of something that has formed because of SOLUTION weathering
Salt
When large areas of bedrock forms sinkholes, this is because of which type of weathering?
Solution weathering
Explain what HYDROLYSIS is
It is LIMESTONE PAVEMENT with grites and clints
How does a limestone pavement with grites and clints form?
- a mineral in the rock dissolves because of rain
- the rock weakens and breaks up
- the limestone forms GROOVES called GRITES
- the flat-topped ridges are called CLINTS
What do you call the “structure” when underground limestone is dissolved?
Limestone CAVES
Name 3 things you will find in a Limestone Cave
1) Stalagmites
2) Stalactites
3) Calsite Pillars
Explain HONEYCOMB Weathering
This is when DIFFERENT minerals dissolve at DIFFERENT rates
Minerals with faster chemical reaction breaks down FIRST, leaving small holes in the rock (this looks like a honeycomb)
Explain OXIDATION
Minerals in the rock reacts with OXYGEN and produces a RED or YELLOW oxide or hydroxide
When IRON mixes with OXYGEN to form IRON IOXIDE, it is referred to as RUST. What type of Chemical Weathering is this?
Oxidation
