Part of weathering (Biological) Flashcards
Define BIOLOGICAL weathering
Breaking down of rocks into smaller particles by LIVING things
Provide 2 examples of BIOLOGICAL weathering
1) PLANTroot growth
2) ANIMAL borrows
Explain how ACID RAIN is an example of BIOLOGICAL weathering
CARBON DIOXIDE in the air reacts with minerals in the rock
What do LICHES do on a rock to break it down through BIOLOGICAL weathering
LICHES give off chemicals to break up the rock to take up the minerals inside a rock
Explain (in short) how HUMAN activities effect weathering
1) Burning of fossil fuels and pollution
2) Open mining
3) Construction
How does CONSTRUCTION (human activity) effect weathering
Dynamite is used to break up rock.
The rocks are exposed to elements (such as wind and water)
How does OPEN MINING (human activity) affect weathering
The surface is exposed to water and wind.
The water and wind reacts with the rock that leads to chemical weathering.
How does BURNING OF FOSSIL FUELS or POLLUTION (human activity) affect weathering
It makes the air more acid and causes ACID rain
Give a short definition of WEATHERING
Breaking down of rocks
Give a short definition of EROSION
TRANSPORTING of material that has been weathered by WATER, WIND and ICE
Give a short definition of DEPOSITION
DEPOSITION (weather materials) is loaded off at a new place
