Q

What is an Atom ?

A

Are what make up all matter
Their name means ‘indivisible’ that is they are the smallest unit something can be broken down into (well as far as we are concerned anyway) – it can’t be divide further
Atoms come in different types
They contain 3 subatomic particles – protons, neutrons and electrons

Q

What is a proton ?

A

Positively charged particles inside the nucleus. The number of Protons an atom has determines which element it is.

Q

What is an electron ?

A

Negatively charged particles that surround the nucleus. There is the same number of electrons as protons in an element. Electrons are extremely tiny, we think of them having basically no mass
