Labelling in Spain
- note: quality of the grapes plays an important role in determining the style of wine that can be made.
Joven - young, fruity wines, no minimum ageing requirements, released in year following vintage. Primary fruit flavors.
Crianza - must be aged in oak barrels prior to release. Secondary oak-derived flavors alongside primary.
Reserva - must age for extended periods of time before release, both in oak barrels and in bottle. Over time, the tannins soften and some of the fresh fruit flavors become cooked or dried. Final wines have complex layers of primary fruit flavors, secondary oak-derived flavors, and tertiary notes (dried fruit, mushroom.)
Gran Reserva - subject to highest minimum ageing requirements and have the most pronounced secondary and tertiary aromas.
Important regions
Spain: Catalunya, Rioja, Ribera del Duero
