Temporomandibular Joint Flashcards
What are the Functional and Normal opening ranges of the Mouth?
- Functional- three fingers or two knuckles of the nondominant hand
- Normal- four fingers or three knuckles
What is the normal range of motion for lateral deviation and protrusion of the jaw?
- Lateral Deviation- 1/4 of the normal opening
- Protrusion- 5 mm
How do you differentiate pain coming from the retrodiskal pad and muscle contraction?
- Bite down on cotton roll in the back molars
- If pain decreases- Retrodiskal pad
- If pain increases- Muscle
What are parafunctional habits?
- Clenching, Bruxing, biting nails, etc
How does Anteriorly Displaced Disk present clinically?
- pain and limited opening with deviation to involved side
- Single click in early stages, opening and closing clicks in reducing stage, no clicking in non reducing phase
What is an Open Lock?
- Inability to close mouth
- Occurs mostly after yawning or dental procedures
- Occurs because of an overstretch of the lateral pterygoid
- results in posterior displacement of the disk
When would you see a “C” or an “S” curve upon opening?
- C Curve- Capsular Pattern
- S Curve- Muscle Imbalance
What is Myofascial Pain Disorder Syndrome?
- Pain syndrome originating in myofascial structures. Trigger Points and referred pain.
- Most prevalent cause of TMJ Dysfunction
- Includes Neck, Face, Neck pain and Earache, tinnitus and dizziness
When would you use a repositioning splint?
- To recapture the Anteriorly Dislocated Disk or Manage the Disk-Condyle Discoordinaton
When would you use a resting splint?
- When relaxation or balancing of soft tissue is desired
What are the three cardinal features of Temporomandibular Dysfunction?
- Restricted Jaw Function
- Joint Noises (of the TMJ)
- Orofacial Pain (Masticatory Myalgias)
What is Trismus?
- an Acute Closed Lock of the jaw after a dental procedure
- caused by muscle spasm of the masseter muscle
