Temporal Region Flashcards
What are the muscles of the Temporal region?
Temporalis and Masseter
What is the origin of the Temporalis muscle?
floor of the temporal fossa and temporal fascia
What is the insertion of the Temporalis muscle?
coronoid process and medial surface of ramus of mandible
What is the innervation of the Temporalis muscle?
deep temporal nerve (CN V)
What is the blood supply of the Temporalis muscle?
deep temporal branches of maxillary artery
What is the action of the Temporalis muscle?
muscle of mastication
What is noteworthy about the Temporalis muscle?
derivative of first pharyngeal arch
What is the origin of the Masseter muscle?
zygomatic arch
What is the insertion of the Masseter muscle?
external surface of the ramus and angle of mandible
What is the innervation of the Masseter muscle?
masseteric nerve (CN V)
What is the blood supply of the Masseter muscle?
masseteric branches of maxillary artery
What is the action of the Masseter muscle?
muscle of mastication
What is noteworthy about the Masseter muscle?
powerful chewing muscle
What are the muscles of mastication?
temporalis, masseter, lateral and medial pterygoids. (All are innervated by the mandibular division of CN V)
What are the boundaries of the Temporal region?
anteriorly: frontal and zygomatic bones
posteriorly and superiorly: the temporal lines
laterally: zygomatic arch
inferiorly: infratemporal crest
(contains the temporalis and masseter muscles)
