Muscles of the Tongue Flashcards
What are the muscles of the Tongue?
Intrinsic Muscles, Extrinsic Muscles (Genioglossus, Hyoglossus, Styloglossus, Palatoglossus)
What is the origin of the Intrinsic muscles?
confined to tongue
What is the insertion of the Intrinsic muscles?
no bony attachment
What is the innervation of the Intrinsic muscles?
CN XII
What is the action of the Intrinsic muscles?
function to change the shape of the tongue
What is noteworthy about the Intrinsic muscles?
consist of fibers that run longitudinally, vertically, and transversely.
What is the origin of the Genioglossus muscle?
mental spine of mandible
What is the insertion of the Genioglossus muscle?
entire dorsum of tongue, body of hyoid
What is the innervation of the Genioglossus muscle?
CN XII
What is the blood supply of the Genioglossus muscle?
lingual artery
What is the action of the Genioglossus muscle?
unilaterally will push tongue to contralateral side.
bilaterally will protrude the tongue
What is the origin of the Hyoglossus muscle?
body and greater horn of hyoid
What is the insertion of the Hyoglossus muscle?
inferior aspects of lateral part of the tongue
What is the innervation of the Hyoglossus muscle?
CN XII
What is the blood supply of the Hyoglossus muscle?
lingual artery
What is the action of the Hyoglossus muscle?
depresses tongue
What is the origin of the Styloglossus muscle?
distal styloid process, stylohyoid ligament
What is the insertion of the Styloglossus muscle?
margins of tongue posteriorly
What is the innervation of the Styloglossus muscle?
CN XII
What is the blood supply of the Styloglossus muscle?
ascending pharyngeal artery
What is the action of the Styloglossus muscle?
retrudes tongue
