Temporal & Infratemporal Fossa Flashcards
What is the anterior border of the temporal fossa?
frontal process of zygomatic bone & zygomatic process of frontal bone
What is the inferior border of the temporal fossa?
infratemporal crest
What is the floor of the temporal fossa?
Frontal, parietal, temporal & greater wing of sphenoid bone (includes pterion)
What is the roof of the temporal fossa?
Roof formed by temporal fossa
What are the contents of the infratemporal fossa? (Muscles, Blood vessels & Nerves)
Muscles: Lateral pterygoid & medial pterygoid
Blood vessels: Maxillary artery; pterygoid venous plexus
Nerves: mandibular, inferior alveolar, lingual, buccal, otic ganglion
What are the 3 segments of the maxillary artery?
1st segment: Mandibular
2nd segment: Pterygoid
3rd segment: Pterygopalatine
What are some of the main branches of the mandibular part of the maxillary artery?
- Middle meningeal artery
- Inferior alveolar artery
What are some of the main branches of the Pterygoid part of the maxillary artery?
- Buccal artery
- Masseteric artery
What are some of the main branches of the Pterygopalatine part of the maxillary artery?
- Superior alveolar artery
- Infra-orbital artery
- Descending palatine artery
What cranial fossa does the trigeminal nerve (CN V) come from?
Foramen ovale
What are the main branches from the mandibular nerve (CN V3)?
Auriculotemporal nerve
Inferior alveolar nerve
Lingual nerve
Buccal nerve
What is a way to identify the auriculotemporal nerve?
It encircles the middle meningeal artery
What area does the lingual nerve innervate?
- Anterior 2/3rds of tongue
- Floor of mouth
- Lingual gingivae
