Root of the Neck Flashcards
what are the boundaries of the root of the neck?
[Anterior, Posterior, Lateral, Inferior]
Anterior - Top of manubrium & superior border of clavicle
Posterior - Body of T1 & Superior margin of scapula to coracoid process
Lateral - First pair of ribs & costal cartilages
Inferior - Superior thoracic aperture (thoracic inlet) & axillary inlets
What is the cervical pleura?
Superior continuation of the coastal & mediastinal parts of the parietal pleura which covers the apex of the lungs
what is the suprapleural membrane?
A strong fibrous connective tissue that reinforces the cervical pleura
what is the suprapleural membrane?
A strong fibrous connective tissue that reinforces the cervical pleura
what are the branches of the subclavian artery?
- Vertebral artery
- thyrocervical artery
- Internal thoracic artery
- Costocervical trunk
What is the course of the vertebral artery?
Ascends in neck as cervical part to foramen transversaium of C6 (vertebrae) and ascends through to C1. Travels to foramen magnum on base of skull
What is the course of the thyrocervical artery/trunk and what does it branch into?
Ascends from subclavian artery and splits into:
- Inferior thyroid artery
- Transverse cervical artery
- Suprascapular artery
what is the course of the internal thoracic artery and where does it branch to?
From subclavian artery and DESCENDS splitting into intercostal arteries
what is the course of the costocervical trunk and what does it divide into?
Ascends posteromedially from subclavian artery & divides into;
- Supreme intercostal artery
- Deep cervical artery
What drain into the subclavian vein?
- Axillary vein continuation into subclavian after lateral border of 1st rib
- external jugular vein
- Also thoracic duct (main vessel of lymphatic system)
what are the anterior prevertebral muscles & what do they do?
Anterior:
- Longus colli
- Longus capitis
- Rectus capitis anterior
- Anterior scalene
