Brain: Blood Supply & Venous Drainage Flashcards
What are the main arterial supply to the brain?
2 main pairs of arteries:
- Internal carotid artery
- Vertebral artery
what is the meningeal blood supply?
Anterior meningeal artery
Middle meningeal artery
Posterior meningeal artery
What is the arterial circle of willis?
The joining areas of several arteries at the bottom/inferior of the brain to create a ring
What arteries comprise the arterial circle of willis?
- Vertebral Artery (connects to basilar)
- Basilar artery
- Posterior cerebral artery
- Posterior communicating artery
- Anterior cerebral artery
- Anterior communicating
what is the impact of cerebral artery occlusion (stroke) on the brain? (Anterior, Middle, Posterior cerebral occlusion)
Anterior:
- Contralateral (opposite side) hemiparesis (hard to move) hemisensory (hard to feel sensation) loss MAINLY THE LEG & FOOT
Middle:
- Contralateral hemiparesis and hemisensory loss involving mainly the face & arm
Posterior:
- Contralateral homonymous hemianopia (over half field of vision blindness) with some degree of macular sparing (central field of view spared)
What is a dural venous sinus and whats its function?
Spaces between periosteal & meningeal layers of dura, they are lined by endothelium.
Function: Venous drainage of brain and CSF reabsorption via arachnoid vili
what are the main dural venous sinuses?
- Intercavernous sinus
- Sphenoparietal sinus
- Cavernous sinus
- Interior & superior petrosal sinus
- Sigmoid sinus
- Straight sinus
What are the types of intracranial haemorrhage? (in the skull)
- Extradural/Epidural haemorrhage (above dura)
- Subdural haemorrhage (beneath dura)
- Subarachnoid haemorrhage (beneach arachnoid)
What is an extradural/epidural haemorrhage?
Damage/tear to a meningeal artery to cause bleeding above the dura
What is a subarachnoid
