Superficial Face & Muscles of Facial Expression Flashcards
What is the extent of the face?
Anterior aspect of the head from forehead to chin and one ear to another
Describe the nerves all involved in the CUTANEOUS nerve supply of the face & scalp
CN V1, 2, 3
Cervical 2 (greater occipital)
Cervical 3 (third occipital)
C2 & C3 (angle of mandible and greater auricular nerve (just behind the ear)
What is the nerve supply & actions of the orbicularis oculi?
Innervation: Temporal & Zygomatic branches of Facial nerve (CN VII)
Actions: Close eyelids by contracting whether involuntary or deliberate
What is the attachments, nerve supply & actions of the orbicularis oris?
Attaches: Mandible/Maxilla medially, and surrounding muscles
Innervation: Buccal & Mandibular branches of CN VII
Action: to close and/or protrude the lips
What is the nerve supply & actions of the buccinator?
Innervation: Buccal branches of CN VII
Action: Press cheeks against molar teeth + works with tongue to keep food between occlusal surfaces
What is the attachments, nerve supply & actions of the platysma?
Origin: Subcutaneously of clavicular region
Insertion: Base of mandible
Innervation: Cervical branch of CN VII
Action: Tense the skin of interior face/neck & depress mandible
What artery does the majority of the blood supply to the face come from, and what branches does it have?
External carotid artery = majority
Branches of ECA:
- Facial artery
- Buccal, mental, infraorbital (maxillary branch)
- Transverse facial artery
What is the main vein in the face that drains the majority of the blood into the Internal jugular vein?
Facial Vein
& some transverse facial vein (upper face)
