Temporal And Infratemporal Fossae Flashcards
What is the temporal fossa?
The temporal fossa is a shallow depression on the side of the skull.
What are the boundaries of the temporal fossa?
Superior: superior temporal line
Inferior: Zymgomatic Arch
Floor: Frontal , Parietal, Temporal,Sphenoid bones
Roof: Skin and Temporal Fascia
What are the contents of the temporal fossa?
Temporalis muscle
Deep temporal nerves and vessels
Superficial temporal vessels
Auriculotemporal nerve]
What artery is located in the Pterion area?
Middle meningeal artery
What is the infratemporal fossa?
Area which lie below the skull, medial to the ramus and posterior to maxilla
What are the boundaries of the infratemporal fossa
Superior- greater wing of sphenoid bone
Inferior- open
Medial- lateral pterygoid plate
Anterior- posterior surface of maxilla
Posterior- tympanic plate, mastoid and styloid process
Lateral-ramus
What are the four muscles of mastication?
Masseter
Temporalis
Lateral Pterygoid
Medial Pterygoid
What do the muscles of mastication do?
They move they mandible during speech and mastication.
What are the muscles of mastication developed from?
They are developed from the mesoderm of the 1st pharyngeal arch
What nerve are the muscles of mastication supplied by?
They are supplied by branches of the mandibular nerve
What is the origin of the masseter?
Lower border and deep surface of the zygomatic arch
What is the insertion of the masseter?
Outer surface of ramus and angle of mandible
Nerve supply of the masseter?
Masseteric nerve of from mandibular nerve
What is the action of the masseter?
The masseter elevates the mandible, closing the jaw.
What is the origin of the temporalis muscle?
The origin of the temporalis muscle is Floor of temporal fossa and deep surface of temporal fascia.
What is the insertion of the temporalis muscle?
The insertion of the temporalis muscle is coronoid process of the mandible and anterior border of the ramus of mandible
What is the nerve supply of the temporalis muscle?
Deep temporal nerves from mandibular nerve
What are the actions of the temporalis muscle?
Elevates the jaw,closing the mandible.
Posterior fibers retract the protruded mandible
What are the origins of the lateral pterygoid?
Upper head- infra-temporal surface greater wing of sphenoid bone
Lower head- lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate.
What are the insertions of the lateral pterygoid?
Both heads join together and are inserted into the pterygoid fovea of the neck of mandible and the articulation disk of tempromandibular joint.
What is the nerve supply to the lateral pterygoid muscle?
Mandibular nerve
What are the actions of the lateral pterygoid?
Depresses the mandible
Lateral+medial pterygoid muscles protrude the mandible.
Side to side grinding movements
What is the origin of the medial pterygoid?
Superficial head- tuberosity of maxilla
Deep head- medial surface lateral pterygoid plate
What is the insertion of the medial pterygoid?
Both heads join together and are inserted into inner surface of ramus and angle of mandible
