What is point - of- view shot?
A shot that is filmed from the perspective of a particular person or character within the text.
What is canted angle?
A shot filmed from an oblique or slanted angle.
What is foreshadow?
To hint at something that will happen later in the narrative.
What is commissioning?
To give a programme the go-ahead production - to ‘greenlight’ it.
What is Narrowcasting?
Unlike broadcasting, which addresses the needs of a mass audience, narrowcasting targets more specialised audiences.
What is Multi-channel era?
The idea that following the introduction satellite and cable television in the 1990’s and the rise of technologies, viewers now have a much wider range of channels to choose from.
What is flagship show?
A programme that has particular importance for a channel or broadcaster - one that attracts particularly high ratings.
What are stock characters?
The basic character types that you would conventionally expect to find in a certain kind of media product.
What is audience surrogate?
A character within the text that stands in for the audience.
What is point of identification?
A character within the text that the audience can identify with or relate to.
What is binary opposition?
Occurs when two people, ideas, concepts or values are set-up in conflict with one another
What is iconography?
The visual elements of a media product such as the props, costumes and settings that are used.
What is Verisimilitude?
Having the appearance of truth or authenticity.
What is dystopia?
A world or society that is as bad or dysfunctional as can be imagined - a world full of crime, violence or oppression, for example.
What is Android?
A robot that looks like a human.
What is artificial intelligence?
The branch of computer science that is concerned with the capacity of machines to simulate human behaviour by carrying out tasks and actions that normally require human decision-making.
What is pre-sold?
When a product has a ready - made audience, therefore minimising financial risk.
What is an anthology series?
Each episode features a completely different set of characters and a completely different story.
What is voice-of-God?
A form of commentary or voiceover provided by an unseen narrator.
What is fly-on-the-wall?
A form of documentary filmmaking in which the camera is an invisible presence.
What is juxtaposition?
Involves placing two or more items next to one another to meaningful effect.
What is the objective truth?
The idea that there is a single version of events that is not subject to personal interpretation.
What are enigma codes?
They are the questions or mysteries that a narrative sets up in order to make the audience continue watching.
What is serial?
A narrative form in which the story unfolds episode by episode, unlike the episodes in a television series.
