What is equilibrium?
To do with balance, stability or order.
What is essentialisation?
A process that involves ascribing certain traits or characteristics to someone by nature.
What is content analysis?
A research method that provides quantitative data.
What is symbolic annihilation?
The idea that the under-representation of particular social groups works to maintain social inequalities.
What is proppian princess?
The princess or ‘sought for person’ is one the character roles or narrative functions.
What is hypermasculinity?
Where stereotypically masculine traits such as power, toughness or physical strength are presented in exaggerated form.
What are sexual politics?
Refers to the power relations between men and women.
What are public service broadcasters?
A radio or television broadcaster that is seen to offer a public service by catering for a range of tastes and audiences.
What is Burden of representation?
The idea that when representations of particular social groups are limited.
What is ethnocentric?
Roger Brown defines ethnocentrism as ‘the application of the norms of one’s own culture to that of others’.
What is media conglomerate?
A company that owns other companies across a range of media platforms.
What is regulatory approval?
Changes in the ownership of media organisations can be referred to the media regulator if there is a possibility that they may not be in the public interest.
What is advertising spots?
They are the spaces in commercial breaks that are sold to advertisers.
What is sponsorship bumper?
A short clip featuring the name or logo of the sponsor that appears between the programme and the advertisements.
What is remit?
A remit outlines a broadcaster’s particular areas of responsibility.
What are original productions?
Production that are commissioned by broadcasters rather than brought in.
What are independent productions?
In the broadcasting industry, these are productions that are produced by companies that are independent of the broadcasters.
What is vertical integration?
A process whereby one company acquires another involved at different level of industry.
What is publisher-broadcaster?
A broadcaster that commissions all of it’s programmes from other production companies.
What is ident?
A graphic that conveys a sense of a channel’s identity.
What is Privatisation?
When a company is taken out of public ownership and sold to a private bidder.
What is first-run?
A first-run programme is one that is available for public viewing for the first time.
What is watershed?
Its the time where its permissible to show programmes that are unsuitable for younger audiences. (UK - 9pm).
What is scheduling?
Making decisions about when to broadcast programmes.
What is prime-time?
The time when most viewers are likely to be watching television.
What is Non-linear viewing?
When viewers watch programmes at times of their choosing.
What is mean world syndrome?
The idea that regular exposure to television can lead to a distorted view of the real world.
