What is web 2.0?
A new phases in the Internet’s development, characterised by interactivity, user participation, connection and collaboration.
What are content creators?
Those who are involved in creating and sharing content online.
What is a hyperlink?
A word, phrase or image in an electronic document or web page that the reader can click on to navigate to a different part of the document or a different page.
What is a blogger?
Someone who engages in blogging, which is the practice of updating or adding material to a blog.
What is a vlog?
A blog in video form.
What is para-social interaction?
The illusion of face-to-face conversation constructed through techniques such as a direct mode of address. The term was originally coined by Horton and Wohl in their article ‘Mass communication and Para - social interaction’.
What is a walkthrough?
A demonstration of how to play a video game in which the vlogger ‘walks’ the viewer through the necessary stages or levels.
What is ‘Let’s play’ video?
A recording of someone playing a video game, usually accompanied by some form of commentary.
What is non-verbal communication?
Communication that doesn’t involve words.
What is a gatekeeper?
A person or organisation that is involved in filtering content in some way.
What is user-generated content?
Material created by everyday users of media platforms rather than by professionals working for media organisations.
What is web traffic?
The number of people who visit a particular page or website.
What is multi-channel networks?
Organisations that curate a large number of channels.
What is monetisation?
The process through which a product or service is converted into a source of commercial revenue.
What is Algorithm?
A set of steps or rules that are followed in order to make a calculation, solve a problem or complete a task.
What is a digital influencer?
Someone with a significant online following who has the ability to shape and influence the opinions or behaviour of their followers.
What is Brand recognition?
The extent to which a brand can be quickly and easily identified.
What is synergy?
A term used to describe the cross-promotion of products.
What is convergence?
The process through which different media industries and forms merge with one another or move closer together.
What is Transmedia storytelling?
Defined by Henry Jenkins as ‘a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience’.
What is CAP code?
The advertising code that covers non-broadcast media. The code is written by the Committee of advertising practice (CAP).
What is Advertorial?
An advertisement that is presented in the style of the media product in which it features.
What is Metadata?
The additional or contextual information that accompanies an online video.
What is a collaboration video?
A video that features two or more content creators working together in collaboration.
