tectonic processes Flashcards
1
Q
what is slab pull?
A
- newly formed oceanic crust cools to become thicker and denser
- causing it to sink into the mantle
- driving force of plate movement
2
Q
what is palaeomagnetism?
A
- confirmed seafloor spreading
- minerals in the rocks match up to the polarity at the time
- as earth’s magnetic fields (polarity) swap every 400,000 years
3
Q
what is seafloor spreading?
A
- mid-ocean ridges and underwater volcanos are formed when magma rises
- this forms new oceanic crust which moves plates apart
