primary and secondary effects of earthquakes Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 4 primary effects?
A
- fire
- fatalities
- building collapse
- ground shaking
2
Q
what are the 3 secondary effects of earthquakes?
A
- landslides
- tsunamis
- liquefaction
3
Q
how do landslides occur?
A
when the pressure of the shaking ground exceeds the strength of the rock, causing the rocks to lose cohesive strength and slide downwards due to gravity.
4
Q
how does liquefaction occur?
A
when the pressure of the ground shaking causes rocks to lose cohesive strength and begin to act like a liquid, so are unable to support building foundations, causing buildings to collapse.

A
6
Q
how do tsunamis occur?
A
caused by seabed displacement
