Technology, Society And Enviroment Flashcards
What are the 7 input devices and what do they do?
Input devices are used to interact with the computing device and import information.
MOUSE
Hand held pointing device. It can be wired or wireless. Laptops usually have a built in trackpad instead of a mouse.
GRAPHIC TABLET
Allows a designer to us a pen stylus on a track page to draw straight into the computing device. These are used for digital sketching.
KEYBOARD
Allows for users to input a range of data to a computing device including numbers, letters, directions and functions. Many CAD and desktop publishing packages have a range of keyboard shortcuts that can be used to increase the speed for the user.
DIGITAL CAMERA
Professional DSLR cameras allow users to take high quality images. These can be input into a computing device to allow images to be used in designs and for editing.
FLATBED SCANNER
Enables sketches, drawings and other documents to be copied electronically, allowing them to be stored and edited digitally.
HAND-HELD SCANNER
A smaller more portable version of the flatbed scanner where the user moves the scanner along the surface of a document.
3D SCANNER
Allows a 3D product to be scanned and turned into a 3D digital file. They capture measurements of 3D objects and can quickly create models of complex shapes. Examples of use are in medicine to create prosthetics and in orthodontics to create braces.
What are the 4 output devices and what do they do?
Output devices allow for computer data into text, graphics, audio, video or tactile.
MONITOR
Computer monitors output information visually. It is what allows users to interact with the computer and view what they have produced. For DTP, it is desirable to have a high definition resolution, a large screen size and the ability to display a vast RGB colour space. Many designers have more than one monitor in their computing system to reduce clutter on their monitor.
PROJECTOR
Projectors are devices that project what would be seen on a monitor onto a large surface. They are often used to present ideas to a client or design team.
PRINTERS
Printers are devices that output digital formats to physical formats.
2D AND 3D COMPUTER AIDED MANUFACTURE
2D and 3D graphics can be exported to computer aided manufacturing devices and machines including 2D laser cutters and 3D printers.
These output devices are used to create prototypes and models.
What are benefits of modern printing techniques?
Complex images can be printed.
A large range of colours can be used.
The printing process is faster.
What is an inkjet printer (advantages and disadvantages)?
They are usually found in small offices or homes. They don’t take up much space and are more economical for smaller print jobs. They print with vivid colours and high quality. Ink cartridges can be purchased.
ADVANTAGES
Printers are inexpensive
Photographic quality
DISADVANTAGES
Ink cartridges are expensive
Liquid ink can take time to dry and can smudge
What is a laser printer (advantages and disadvantages)?
They are more suitable for mass printing at a low cost and have a fast printing speed. Laser printers are more expensive than inkjet initially, but save more money and are more economical in the long run due to the lower cost of print and printing speed.
ADVANTAGES
What is a wide format printer (advantages and disadvantages)?
It is used to print banners, posters and wallpapers etc. it can consist of inkjet or laser based technology.
ADVANTAGES
Can print in huge sizes
Quick for short runs of posters or displays
DISADVANTAGES
Liquid ink can take time to dry - can smudge
Solvent inks are very expensive
What is a drum plotter printer?
They are printers which rely on vector format. Images are created by lines on a grid. They are used to print architectural or engineering plans.
What is offset lithography (advantages and disadvantages)?
They are used for mass production print runs.
ADVANTAGES
Low cost for high volume print runs
Can print on different types of paper
DISADVANTAGES
Specialist training required
Time consuming to set up
What is screen printing (advantages and disadvantages)?
ADVANTAGES
Bright vibrant colours
Can print on different materials like fabric
DISADVANTAGES
Slow and sometimes a messy process
Expensive to set up equipment
How do you reduce the environmental impact of ink?
Keeping the background of a printed document white to reduce ink
Reduce the scale of the printed document
Use environmentally friendly ink such as:
Soy ink - it is renewable due to soy beans being a renewable resource.
Wax ink - it has an excellent colour quality but required a special print process to melt the wax on to the paper.
How can you reduce the impact of wasted material?
Reduce scale of document
Reduce the gauge(thickness) of paper
Use recycled paper
What are the advantages of the paperless office?
Easier to enable remote working
Reduced cost for ink, toner and paper
Improves the corporate image of a company
Time saved retrieving physical copies
What is file management and how is it useful?
All computer data is stored in files. It is important when creating assemblies using parts as a CAD programme needs to know where to find specific parts.
What are the advantages of remote working? (Working digitally online with colleagues having a constant communication)
Ability for 24 hour working across the globe
Easy to send graphics and documents electronically to relevant people
Reduced need to commute and travel
What are the advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing?
ADVANTAGES
It allows users to access their work from anywhere
Many staff can work collaboratively on projects simultaneously - allows for collaboration of a company
Can be accessed remotely, even internationally
DISADVANTAGES
Cloud can be hacked leading to problems of data security
Requires internet access to internet at all times
Cloud services may fail leading to operational problems
What are the advantages and disadvantages of cloud storage? (Storing data online which is accessible over the internet)
ADVANTAGES
Information can be accessed regardless of location
Can be easily shared with others and accessed on multiple devices
Information can be downloaded/uploaded at any time
DISADVANTAGES
Cloud data could be hacked
Virus infection of the system or software
Requires access to internet to view the cloud at all times
What is advantages of the digital rights movement? (Way of protecting media and prevents unauthorised use of digital content)
Ensures the company have exclusive use of the brand or product
Protected the company from being connected to a sub standard product
Protect the reputation of the product/company and legal protection from others using the logo
What are the issues that may occur if companies in different countered?
Language barriers
Using different dictates
Using different drawing standards
You can overcome this by following the same standards, using similiar graphical language and symbols, publishing documents online in multiple languages.
What are advantages of digital sketching?
The ability to build up a series of layers of sketches to ease editing
Sketches are automatically stored electronically and do not require scanning using hardware
Many sketch tools available such as brushes, materials and colours
Easy to share through email or other electronic means
Designing for electronic devices - multi platform, screen size and aspect ratio, images and colours, file size
Multi platform - it is important that designs can be accessed across different platforms. Each platform contains its own guidelines, users and devices.
Screen size and aspect ratio - screen size may vary across devices. The aspect ratio of a device is the relationship between the width and height. It is important to consider how displays will look on a range of screen sizes. E.g large monitor or smaller smartphone screen.
Images and colours - when designing is it important to use shapes and links that are large enough to be interacted with and colours that contrast to allows the user to clearly see the display. Images should also have high contrast to be visible and be able to be scaled up or down without losing quality.
File size - electronic devices often use the internet to access apps and websites that have been graphically designed. File sizes must be kept small so that the app/website is able to be accessed on a variety of download speeds.
What are the benefits of advertising on social media?
Live information can be added
Screens can scroll or transition to allow for more information to be shown
ability to stream live feeds or events
Free advertising
How can technology (2D plans which can be scanned to show 3D rendered models) aid communocation?
It robusta a more realistic view of the proposed object and is easier to interpret than the 2D drawings
It gives a sense of scale
Clients can use the zoom function to see more detail
Clients can evaluate lighting and a realistic representation of materials
How can 3D models provide a vast amount of information that can assist in the manufacturing of products?
The ability to generate production drawings and assemble information to assist manufacture
Generating drawings with all the required dimensions - which can be evaluated prior to manufacture
3D models can be directly output to CAM machines used for manufacture
What cha testing/ simulation test?
The operation and efficiency of moving parts
The weight/mass of parts of assemblies
The strength of parts/materials
