Drawing Standards, Protocols And Conventions Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of British standards?

A

They are guidelines/rules that a company must adhere to. They ensure a level of quality and consistency through products and services.

They are formal agreements on how something should be done and are widely accepted and followed by industry.

Drawings can contain a lot of detail and technical information so standards and conventions help create a common language and aids for other peoples understanding of a drawing. They also ensure accuracy or measurements and consistency in designs, and clear instructions for executing tasks.

Q

What the conventions of dimensioning?

A

Dimensioning is the process of add measurements and notes to a design. They are included on production drawings to show sizes and angles to provide clear instructions for those manufacturing the product of the drawing.

All sizes in mm

Dimensions must sit above the dimension line

Dimensions must be read from looking at the page or from the right

There must be a gap between the extension line and the item

Arrowheads must be long and thin, and must remain consistent.

Q

5 types of tolerancing?

A

Tolerances show the permissible limit of variation of a product sizes. They are the acceptable tolerances of a product.

Common tolerance - they show the upper limit of the size placed above the lower limit of the size.

Asymmetrical tolerance - they show the normal size plus the upper and lower size of the limits.

Symmetrical tolerance - they show the normal size and then plus minus the tolerance.

Functional tolerance - a dimension which is essential to the function of a component, F.

Non-functional tolerance - a dimension which is not essential to the function of a component, NF.

Q

Rules of exploded views

A

The components must be exploded along the correct plane.

There must be space between different components of it is too difficult to understand.

The distance between exploded parts should be uniform.

All components are exploded in sequence.

All component parts are visible.

Q

Rules for sectioning

A

Hatch lines are added to cut surfaces.

Hatch lines should go in different directions for different parts and should be offset as to not create chevrons.

Hatch lines should be at 45^ and evenly spaced. Angle and space can differ when allowing identification of different parts.

The thick ends of a cutting plane should not intersect with a drawing.
