Techniques to help with changing a behavior (Ch3) Flashcards
In Achieving Self-Control, what is Behavior Modification?

What is the first step?
To specify the target behaviors that you want to change.
How do you gather baseline data?a
Systematically observe your target behavior for a period of time before working out details of program. You must monitor three things
First:Initial response level of target behavior
Second:Monitor Antecedents
Third:Monitor typical consequences of your target behavior
What are Antecedents?
Give examples for overeating
Events that typically precede the target response
If the target is overeating, you might discover that the bulk of it occurs during late in the evening. Then you can make your program to circumvent or break this link
How might you select a reinforcer? Give 5 examples
What are your hobbies? What do you do for fun? What do you do to relax? What do you to get away from it all? On what do you spend your money each week?
What does it mean to “arrange the contingencies?”
Contingencies describe the exact behavioral goals that must be met and the reinforcement that may be rewarded.
What is a Token Economy? Examples?
A system for doling out symbolic reinforces that are exchanged later for a variety of genuine reinforcers.
What is Shaping?
Reinforcing closer and closer approximations of the desired response.
e.g add a half-mile to your jog each day till your reach your goal.
Explain how you can control Antecedents. Overeating example again.
Decreasing the occurrence of an undesirable response may be to identify its antecedents and avoid exposure to them
Staying away from your favorite restaurant.
What is a Behavioral Contract? List the parts.
A written agreement outlining a promise to adhere to the contingenices of a behavior modification prgoram.
Promise to yourself, name the plan, make a self-reward clause have an end reward, and sign it in front of witnesses (usually friends and family)
