Tech for LE blocks (Josh) Flashcards
Sciatic Nerve Block:
position
- Pt placesed in lateral SIMS
- with leg being blocked uppermost, flexed at the knee, resting on dependent LE
*
Sciatic Nerve Block:

Sciatic Nerve Block:
what size needle
22 g 10-12 cm spinal
Sciatic Nerve Block:
advance needle at 2 mA until you see what response with stimulator
- dorsiflexion and plantar flexion of foot
what is one of the largest nerve trunks in the body
sciatic
Femoral Nerve Block:
largest branch of lumbar plexus, formed by posterior branches of what spinal nerves
L2-4
the sciatic nerves arise where ant or post?
the femoral nerves arise where ant or post?
- anterior
- Posterior
Femoral Nerve Block:
the nerve passes under what in the grove formed by the psoas and iliacus muscels
- inguinial ligament
Femoral Nerve Block:
landmarks for needle insertion
- Draw a line connecting the anterior superior iliac and pubic tubercle
- Palpate Femoral artery and draw line denoting its place in groin
- draw a line just lateral to the femoral artery (in the same plane as the previous line insert needle
(NAVI)
or I use
NAVagate a VAN
NAV VAN
Nerve artery vein (no no spot) Vein artery Nerve
Femoral Nerve Block:
Neddle selection
22g “B” bevel (2cm)
Femoral Nerve Block:
what are you looking for to confirm corrct placement of needle

Fascia Iliaca Compartment block:
position
supine
Fascia Iliaca Compartment block:
landmarks
- Palpate inguinal ligament and draw a n outline on skin
- divide ligament drawing into 3 equal parts (lateral, middle, medial)
- place a mark 1 cm caudal to where the middle and lateral marks meet
Fascia Iliaca Compartment block:
needle selection? and why?
touhy
using LOR
Fascia Iliaca Compartment block:
how many LOR will you feel and what are they?
- 1st tip crosses fascia lata
- 2nd fascia iliaca
Fascia Iliaca Compartment block:
steps
- insert needle at 75 degree angle
- 1st LOR
- 2nd LOR
- decrease angle to 30degrees and advance 1 cm cephalad
- aspirate inject over 2 min while giving distal pressure
- massage in cephalad direction
- hold pressure x 2 min
Fascia Iliaca Compartment block:
why is this block used now
3 in 1 block
thats it
good job
