Team and group behavior Flashcards
OBHR
Stages of group development
Forming; what’s going on
Storming; who does this or that
Norming; how do we manage our differences
Performing; can we do this
Adjourning; what’s next
The 5 stages of group development is based on what model?
Bruce Tuckman’s Model An American psychologist emphasizing the importance of each stage in teamwork.
Which of the stages is like the first date and has lots of dependence on the leader
Forming
Which stage does conflict and competition emerge
Storming
Which stage works towards being a cohesive unit and which stage becomes a cohesive unit
Forming, Norming
What is the danger of Norming
Groupthink; the norm overrides realistic appraisal( when people are deeply involved in cohesion)
Main symptoms
- Self Censorship; pressure for uniformity
- Illusion of morality; believe that the overall morality of the group prevails
- Illusion of invulnerability; the group overestimate itself creating invulnerable
What is a form of group think
Abilene Paradox; a group collectively decides on a course of action that is different from the preference of any indiv. in the group. You know I don’t like fish but y’all take me to a sushi spot
Difference btwn Group think and Abilene
For groupthink, the individual is unaware that the team’s decision is wrong or risky while for Abilene group members are aware.
Another word for Group Polarization
Group Shift; tendency for the group to make more extreme decisions than indiv. working alone
Reasons for group polarization
- When we have something in common we’re more comfortable with each other
- Diffused Responsibility; the group as a whole is to blame not me
*Social comparison; i want to be accepted by my group - We are better than this other group
Ways to avoid groupthink
Open discussion
Subgroups
Devil’s advocate (someone with a diff. opinion)
Second-chance meetings
Criticism of the five-stage model
Over generalization
Over simplification
Lack of external influence consideration
Failure to address failure
The Punctuated-Equilibrium Model ?
characterizes deadline- oriented teams to avoid over working others
Stages of PEM
Phase 1- decide a topic and stick to it
Transition- a burst of activity followed by inertia (do nothing)
Completion
Difference between Teams and Groups
A team is a small no. of people with a common purpose, goals and who hold themselves accountable while a group is a collective of mutually independent individuals with sep. goals brought together to achieve something
