teaching strategies Flashcards
what is teaching strategies
organize instruction so that teaching functions are performed in different ways & give the teacher & learner different roles
teaching makes decisions about teaching strategies based on:
goals and objectives preferences of the teacher nature of what is to be learned characteristics of the leader timeframe
what is the difference between direct and indirect instruction
direct: highly active teaching, focused learning
teacher is in total control of what students are learning and how they are learning it
Indirect: high level of student involvement in observing investing ,problem solving
teacher control is reduced & replaced by facilitator, supporter
what are the characteristics of direct instruction?
- breakdown skills into parts
- teacher clearly describes & demonstrates exactly what the -learner is to do
- structured tasks
- active teaching & specific feedback hold students accountable
- evaluate what is learned
what are the characteristics of indirect instruction?
-content presented holistically (meaningful chunks)
-thinking, feeling ,interaction skills are build into learning experiences
concern with the relevance & meaningfulness of what is to be learned
When do you use direct or indirect instruction?
direct is used when content has a hierarchical structure, basic skill oriented, efficiency of learning is important, mastering basic skills efficiently
indirect is used when objectives and goals required more complex learning, objectives involved other learning domains, solving movement problems discovering tactics & strategies, multiple responses are appropriate/possible
methods for direct instruction
- structured overview
- explicit teaching
- drill and practice
- lecture
- compare and contrast
- demonstration
- step by step instruction
- play books
methods for indirect instruction
- problem solving tasks
- case studies
- reflection
- concept mapping
- inquiry learning
- research
- trail & error
Pros & Cons of direct instruction
Pros: expectations are clear, efficiency, avoid bad habits, allows more time for practice, all learners getting same info
cons: doesn’t teach kids to problem sp;ve, less retainable
pros & cons of indirect instruction
pros: allows kids to think cognitively, more individualized , they figure out how to be successful, doing own problem solving
cons: time consuming, don’t know what they are doing develop bad habits, unorganized, different rates of learning
what are the 7 teaching strategies
- interactive teaching
- station teaching
- peer teaching
- cooperative learning
- self-instruction
- cognitive strategies
- team teaching
