what should be the goal of motivation for our learners?
- engaged at a high level with learning experience
- motivated to participate in activity
- develop a personal interest in activities that are strong enough to develop life long participation
What does motivation look like for young athletes
- love to practice & compete
- like to work on weaknesses so they can improve
- get excited to compete
- have high expectations for their performance
- are dedicated to their sport
- stay committed even when challenged
What does motivation look life for motivated learners
- persistent in developing skills
- spend a long time on an activity
- choose a particular activity/skill to work on
- go after their goals with intensity
2 types of motivation
intrinsic - motivation to engage in behaviour arise from within the individual because its intrinsically rewarding
extrinsic - motivation to behave or engage in activity to earn a reward or avoid punishment
how to develop motivation
- motivation through fear
- motivation through incentives
- motivation through purpose
what are the 5 theories of motivation
- behaviorism
- social learning
- self determination
- achievement goal/ social goal
- interest
how does social learning happen?
observing others, reinforcement of others comparison to others
students are more likely to be engaged when:
- need for competence (feelings of success)
- need for autonomy (feeling of control)
- need for relatedness (belonging)
locus of control
what a student attributes their success/failure to
master goal/ task orientation
success is achieve through intrinsic interest, high effort and cooperation (increases competence)
goal (ego) orientation
success is achieved by being better than everyone else (social compares)
interest theorie 2 parts:
personal- inherent desire to participate
situational- characteristic of the task
Maslow hierarchy of needs
self actualization self esteem love and belonging safety and security physiological needs
what is the struggle with students and motivation? what is it with athletes?
being able to gain motivation
understanding why motivation has been lost & working to regain/maintain for long periods of time
why do kids play sports
- have fun
- something they are good at
- improve skills
- stay in shape -
- get exercise
