What are the three types of schemata for reading?
Content: knowledge of the world (top down)
Formal: Knowledge of text type
Linguistic:Grammatical structures, Lexicon, Syntax (bottom up)
What is the difference between skimming, scanning and sampling
Scanning: looking for one specific thing
Skimming: brief reading when you don’t know what your looking for
Sampling: reading the first sentence of each paragraph
What are Dr. Bateman’s three purposes of pre-reading activities

Information Activities: assess comprehension, consider both the text in its entirety and specific details
Linguistic Activities: Use reading as a vehicle for language learning
Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation Activities: Develop critical thinking, evaluate the merit of the text, examine cultural perspectives, synthesize content and link reading to other skills
