Teaching Methods Flashcards
Material organization
Once a determination of objectives and standards has been made, and instructor formulates a plan of action to lead students through the course in a logical manner towards the desired goal.
Usually the goal for students is a certificate or rating
Traditional organization of a lesson plan is:
Introduction
development
conclusion
Teaching methods
Material organization The lecture method The cooperative or group learning method The guided discussion method The demonstrated-performance method Computer Based Training method
Introduction
The introduction is composed of 3 parts
Attention
Motivation
Overview
Attention
The purpose of the attention is to focus each students attention on the lesson
The instructor begins by telling a story, showing a video, asking questions, telling a joke
The main concern is to gain the attention of everyone and concentrate on the subject
Motivation
The purpose of the motivation elements is to offer the students specific reasons why the lesson content is important to know
The instructor may talk about an occurrence where the knowledge in there lesson was applied
This motivation should appeal to each student personally and engender a desire to learn the material
Overview
Every lesson introduction should contain an overview that tells the group what is to be covered during the period
A clear, concise preseveration of the objective and the key ideas gives the student a road map of the route to be followed
Develoment
Development is the main part of the lesson the instructor develops the subject matter in a mannor that helps the student achieve the desired learning outcomes
The instruction must logically organize material to show the relationship of the main points in one of the following ways: Past to present Unknown known Simple to complex Most frequent to least used
Conclusion
An effective conclusion retraces the important elements of the lesson and relates them to the objectives.
This review reinforces leaning and improves the retention of what has been learned
New ideas should not be introduced in the conclusion because is will likely confuses the student
Organize the lesson material into a logical format maximize the opportunity for students to retain information
Lecture method
An educational prevention usually delivered by an instructor to a group of students with the use of instructional aid and training devices
Lecture meathod are used for
Presention of new material
Summarizing ideas
Showing relationships between theory and practice
Careful preparation is once key to successful lectures
Preporation should start well in advance of the presentation
Lecture method (4 steps)
Establish the objective and desired outcomes
Research the subject
Organizing the material
Planning productive classroom activities
Delivery of lecture method
Reading from a typed or written manuscript
Reciting memorized material without the aid of a manuscript
Speaking extemporaneously from an outline
Speaking impromptu without preparation
Cooperative or group learing method
An instructor strategy which organizes students into small groups so that they can work together to maximize their own and each other’s learning most significant charactericits of group learing’s is that is continually requires active preparation or the student in the learning process
Instructors need to plan early to determine what the student group is expected to learn and do
Conditions and contrats of group learning
Small heterogeneous groups
Clear, complete instructions of what students are to do in what order
Students perceptions or targeted objectives as their own personal objectives
The opportunity for student success
Student access to and comprehension
Sufficient time for learning
Individual accountability
Recognition and rewards for group success
Time after completion of group success
Students to systematically reflect upon how the worked together as a team
Guided discussion method
An educational presentation typically used in the classroom where the topic is to be clear by a group is introduced and the instructor participates only as necessary to keep the group focussed on the subject
The guided discussion method relies on the student possession of a level of knowledge about the topic to be discussed, either through reading prior o class or a short lecture to set up the topic to be discussed
The goal of the guided discussion is to draw out what the student knows
The instructor acts as a facilitator to encourage discussion between students
In the guided discussion develops, the instructor may ask follow up questions to guide the discussion
