key elements of taylorism (4)
1) Work Study,
2) ‘Normal Times’,
3) Equipment and Training
4) Piece-rate pay`
taylorism 1 work study - use of division of labour
measured the tasks needed to complete the production process, measured the time taken and sought the most efficient methods of completing the task
division of labour
breaking down production into smaller tasks in order to gain efficiency
Taylorism 2 ‘normal time’
used most efficient employees to base as the normal time each task would take
then assessed individual performances against these times
taylorism 3 Equipment and training
Employees provided with the necessary equipment for their task, given elementary training and clear instructions on their duties
example of equipment and training taylorism
Men who shovel coal were given a shovel direct to their physique to maximise their efficiency
Taylorism 4 Piece-rate pay
final stage of the system is to implement a piece-rate system in which employees are paid according to the amount they produce
close supervision of the workforce to ensure maximum effort
According to taylor (taylorism) how are employees motivated
according to taylor employees are only motivated by money
What is a backlash of Taylors views (4 points)
- unpopular with shop-floor workers cause they had to work hard
- increased productivity meant less jobs
- less efficient workers struggled
- caused many strikes
commission
Method of payment in which the amount paid is related to the value of goods and services an employee sells
Piece rate (piecework)
A system whereby employees payed according to the quantity of a product they produce
performance-related pay
