TCM week 1-6 Flashcards
internal vs external causes of disease
internal: emotions (anger, joy, sad, worry, fear…) (become problem if intense or too long)
external: exterior (i.e. pathogenic factors, bacteria, climate, fever)
any long term imbalance: ie too much or too little rest, physical activity, work
which emotion goes with each organ and how do they counteract each other
heart
spleen
lungs
kidney
liver
joy
pensiveness
sadness
fear
anger
heart- joy
spleen- pensiveness
lungs- sadness
kidney- fear
liver- anger
counteract along controlling sequence
effects of emotion on qi
Anger makes Qi rise
Joy slows Qi
Sadness dissolves Qi
Worry knots Qi
Pensiveness knots Qi
Fear makes Qi descend
Shock scatters Qi
all emotions stagnate qi
which organ is effected by all emotions
the heart
how does the combination of all emotions effect qi
causes stagnation of qi, which may lead to blood stagnation
the 4 external pathogenic factos
cold, heat, damp, wind
climatic factors
wind, cold, summer heat, dampness, dryness, fire
yin vs yang
yin: material, grow, matter, contract, descend, female, lower body, winter, night, abdomen
functions: nourish, cool, rest, substance
yang: immaterial, energy, generate, rise, fire, male, upper body, back
functions: warm, transform, move, spark for conception
qi
for growth, warm, defend, homeostasis, nourish, organ function
types of qi
Yuan Qi (Source Qi)
Gu Qi (Food Qi)
Zong Qi (Gathering Qi)
Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi)
Wei Qi (Protective Qi)
Zang-Fu (Organ) Qi
what is blood made from
food qi
food qi from spleen and stomach rises to chest and is acted upon by yuan (source) qi –> sent to the heart to turn to blood (governs)
blood functions
nourish, moisture of hair, bones, bowels, eyes
mental activités (house the mind)
circulate with ying qi (nutritive qi)
menses
blood and the 3 organs
heart governs blood (created from food qi)
spleen makes/ controls blood (keep in place)
liver stores blood
when to wash hands when needling?
-before patient visit
-prior to needling
-after removal of needles
universal precautions when needling
assume everyone has HBV or HIV so protect yourself!
absolute and relative contraindications for needling
absolute contraindications:
-alcohol
-exhaustion
-severe fear
relative
-sex
-hunger
-thirsty
-strenuous exercise
which 2 points cannot be needled
ST 17 (areola) and CV 8 (umbilical)
abrnomal sensations from needling
sharp, spastic contraction of limbs, convulsions, faint, lose colour in face
arterial puncture when needling
cause blood to surface
small arteries= ice and pressure for 5 mins
large artery= 911
hematoma
bruise or swell around needled area
zang fu organs; which is yin and which is yang
zang= yin, fu= yang
functions of lung
- Lungs govern qi and respiration
- Lung diffuses and descends qi
- TCM lung control the skin and the space between skin and muscles
- TCM lung manifest in body hair
- TCM lung opens into the nose
- TCM lung control nasal mucous
- TCM lung houses the corporeal soul or ‘po’
functions of large intestine
- TCM large intestine controls passage and conduction
- Transforms stools and reabsorbs liquids
- Mental aspect of letting go
signs of weak lung qi
tired, weak voice, breathless
which direction does lung qi go
diffuses and descends
what happens in lung qi doesnt descend
accumulate in chest, causing cough, breathlessness and feeling of oppression
what will happen to the skin if lung function is impaired
sweating abysmal, skin will be dry and rough
what will happen to hair if lung cant diffuse qi and fluids
dry and brittle
what will happen to nose if lung is invaded
if by exterior pathogen= runny nose
if by dampness= clogged and blocked
if heat= blood
hun and po
po= corporeal soul (yin)
hun= ethereal soul (yang)
is lungs corporeal soul (po) or ethereal soul (yang)
and what does it help transport
po
helps transport essence
defend against exterior pathogenic factirs
what is the direction of large intestine
down
functions of heart
- Heart governs blood
- Heart controls blood vessels
- Heart manifests in the complexion
- Heart houses the mind
- Heart is related to joy
- Heart opens into the tongue
- Heart controls sweat
functions of small intestine
- SI controls receiving and transforming
- SI separates fluids
- SI influences mental clarity and judgement
what does the heart house?
the mind (shen)
what happens to the mind if heart is deficient
d. Weak heart and deficient blood= emotional problems, poor memory, poor sleep, dull thinking
what emotion is the heart related to
joy
what part of the tongue does the heart control and what are the symptoms in the tongue of a heart condition
tip
stuttering, aphasia, talking, laughing innapropritaltely
if heart qi or heart yin deficiency how does it effect sweating
b. Heart qi deficiency= spontaneous sweating
c. Heart yin deficiency= night sweating
where does the clean and dirty parts of food and drink go from the small intestine to
clean goes to spleen
turbid dirty goes to large intestine –> stool
clear dirty goes to bladder –> urine
which organ to treat urinary problems
SI
spleen functions
- Governs transformation and transportation
- Controls the ascending of qi
- Controls blood
- Controls muscles and four limbs
- Opens into the mouth
- Manifests in the lips
- Controls raising of qi
- Houses the intellect (yi)
- Affected by pensiveness
stomach functions
- Controls receiving
- Controls the rotting and ripening of food
- Controls the transportation of food essences
- Controls the descending of qi
- Is in the origin of fluids
bad vs good spleen function in digestion
c. Normal= good appetite, absorption, bowel movements
d. Impaired= poor appetite, bad digestion, bloating, loose stools
where does clean vs dirty part of spleen food go
clean goes to lungs and skin
dirty goes to intestines
what can effect or be created by the spleen
dampness
no cold drinks!
what type of environment does the spleen like
dryness
which direction does spleen qi go
ascends
what organ could cause weak muscles and limbs
spleen
which organ houses intellect (yi)
spleen
what knots the qi in the upper and middle burner
worry will tend to knot Qi in the Upper Burner, while pensiveness knots Qi in the Middle Burner.
which way does the stomach move qi
downward
urinary bladder functions
- Removes water by qi transformation
- Mental aspect
kidney functions
- Store essence and govern birth, growth, reproduction and development
a. Kidney essence functions - Produce marrow, fill up the brain and control bones
- Govern the transformation and transportation of body fluids
- Control the reception of qi
- Open into the ears
- Manifests in the (head) hair
- Control the two lower orifices
- Houses the willpower (zhi)
- Control the gate of life (minister fire, ming men)
a. root of original (yuan) qi
b. source of physiological fire for all the internal organs
c. harmonizes the sexual function and warms the essence and uterus
d. assists the kidney function for reception of qi
e. assists heart of housing the mind
which organ stores essence and determines growth, development, pregnancy, menopause…
kidney
what is marrow (for brain and bones) derived from
essence
what organ is the gate that opens and closes for body fluid flow to lower burner
kidney
which organ effects hearing
kidney
**remember “ears are shaped like kidneys”
what organ houses willpower (zhi)
