Health Psych week 1-6 Flashcards
safety vs stress
autonomic set point
complete natural stress cycle
safety
physiologic state, perception and relational experience
not the absence of threat, it is the presence of connection
neuroception
individualized, subconscious process that determines our state of activation
based on external (envo) and internal (sensations, emotions, beliefs) cues developed via life experience
inputs go into brainstem
activate HPA axis and ANS and limbic system
degrees of stress
positive: brief, elevated stress hormomes
tolerable; serious but temporary
toxic; intense and prolonged, no buffering relationships
stress slide 25 wk 1
stress hormones –> effects immune, metabolic, respiratory, neurologic –> changes susceptibility to illness and can lead to chronic illness
polyval theory of safety
feelings of safety emerge from internal physiological states regulated by the ANS –> influence mental and physical health, social relationships, cognitive processes, behavioural repertoire, and serving as a neurophysiological susbstate
want to down regulate threat (fight, flight) and up regulate homeostasis (ventral vagal, social engage)
when feel safe can grow and restore and let others too (co regulate)
adversity
causes mental and physical health consequences in the ANS, locked into states of defence
neuroception
neural process to see if envo is safe or dangerous
if in SNS and dorsal vagal
hard to trust, feel safe and coregulate
social connections
coregulate can help down regulate threat
stress
triggering a bodily state of threat and reorganizing the autonomic nervous system to promote survival
disrupts autonomic state and metabolic resources that are needed for homeostasis
interpersonal neurobiology
our brains are shaped through our relationships with significant others
Developmental trayma
not what happens to you, but what happens within
wounded without immediate capacity to heal the wound
young kids traumatized when attuned attention and responsive interaction with parent is unmet
we are born connected to gut feelings, trauma leads to self protection and disconnecting from out feelingsc
cant seperate biological from emotional and social
emotions are inseparable from nervous system, gut, immune and hormones
neurologic response of stress
dysregulated SAM and HPA axes; autonomic imbalances
immunologic/inflammatory response to stress
increase Th2, inhibit anti-ifnlmmatory, gut dysbiosis, increase risk of infection, autoimmune, cancers, cardiometabolic disroders
endocrine response to stress
change growth hormone, thyroid hormone, pubertal hormonal axes
epigenetic response to stress
change DNA transcription; telomere erosion – increase risk for disease, cancer, mortality
ACEs are associated w 9/10 leading causes of death
heart disease, cancer, stroke, dementia, diabetes, sucidie, …
3 realms of ACEs
- household
- environments
- community
3 core human needs
safety
belonging
matter
safety within oneself, with others, in the world, within community, within environment
belonging; being connected, being included etc
mattering; being cared for, heard, seen, affirmed, valued
attachment
meeting discomfort and distress with reliable, loving care so as to soothe the baby/young child and establish CNS patterns of trust, security, and comfort. It’s not about just one behaviour (eg: responding in 1 second when a baby cries) but about providing consistent and kind response that regulates and entrains emotional health and a healthy stress system.
attachment styles
- secure (ventral vagal)
3 insecure styles::
- anxious (high dependecen, low avoidance) (sympathetic)
- avoidant (low dependence, high avoidance) (dorsal vagal)
- disorganized (high dependcen, high avoidance) (freeze)
what causes an insecure attachment style
shame–> a belief that I am flawed; there is something inherently wrong with me that is not fixable; if others knew the real me they would reject me
attending
Tracking autonomic states
Noticing and being able to describe the physical/sensory experience of different states- both large shifts and subtle changes
authenticity vs attachment
if need to fit in to get needs met will suppress emotions to keep connections
what does OARS stand for
Open-ended questions
Affirmation and acknowledgement
Reflection of content + emotion + meaning
Summaries – smiles - silence
