How does TCAS work?
System sends out interrogations, other system replies, time between interrogation is used to calculate distance.
Can a TCAS system detect another aircraft that has it’s radar turned off?
NO, TCAS is not a radar, it relies on interrogations
How many seconds before the point of closest approach will a Traffic Advisory be issued?
40 seconds
How many seconds before the point of closest approach will a Resolution Advisory be issued?
25 seconds
What transponders are invisible on TCAS?
None
What transponder mode does not produce RA?
Mode A
What symbol is represented by ‘proximate traffic’?
White diamond
What symbol is represented by ‘other traffic’?
white outlined diamond
What symbol is represented by ‘traffic advisory’?
Amber circle

how often is the aural “traffic traffic” sounded?
Only once, and will occur again when there is other traffic.
To avoid traffic, what indications should the pilot follow on the Artificial horizon?
Avoid the red squares
When are TCAS aural alerts inhibited?
When other shit is more important. Windshear, stall warning, GPWS, or low RADALT. Note that the screen will still display the RA.
